Volume 5 Fleurs mélodiques des Alpes and other rare works for piano

The enormous project of a tripartite series of piano pieces, inspired by Liszt’s travels in Switzerland and by Swiss traditional melodies, was finally issued complete in 1842 under the title of Album d’un voyageur. There are three parts to this work: I Impressions et Poésies, II Fleurs mélodiques des Alpes and III Paraphrases. The first book of the Années de pèlerinage (published in 1855) reworks material from the first and second parts of the Album, and the third part – actually the first to appear in print, as early as 1836 – was revised much later and published in 1877 as Trois Morceaux suisses. The early versions of Vallée d’Obermann and Les cloches de Genève – it is unclear why Liszt suppressed the full name of the city in his original title – are both very different from the later familiar versions; they both contain much interesting material that was later suppressed or supplanted.
