David Johnson was born in Edinburgh. His career in music included teaching, journalism and management and from 1980-1996 he was the cellist with The McGibbon Ensemble giving frequent concerts of historical Scottish music. He was research fellow in music at Napier University, Edinburgh. His published writings include Music and Society in Lowland Scotland in the 18th Century (1972), Scottish Fiddle Music in the 18th Century (1984), Chamber Music of 18th Century Scotland (2000) and contributions to the New Grove Dictionary. Johnson is the composer of about 50 works, notably 12 Preludes and Fugues for Piano (1995) and the operas Thomas the Rhymer (1976) and Sorry, False Alarm (2001).
